Arrival in Kilmore Quay

As we disembarked from Lynx Clipper, we had one objective, get some of the best ‘Fish ‘n Chips’ in Ireland at The Saltee Chipper. Little did we know that this a relatively common claim as you sail around Ireland, but for sure Kilmore Quay is up there with the best of them.

A Happy Crew, at The Saltee Chipper

Some Advice on the Chipper, the portions are massive. We were big eaters and each portion of anything could do 2 people at least. Yet it was just what we wanted before we might head Southwest along the Copper Coast towards Kinsale that was beckoning!

And as had become very apparent, we charged all devices inside the shop while we ate. Power-banks and charging when possible become a relatively important part for the use of the app Navionics, taking pictures and general comms.

Four and a half pleasurable hours, with a short walk up to the Marine Suppliers Shop which is possibly one of the best in Ireland, called Marine Supplies.

A stop for 4 hours 40 minutes in the beautiful village of Kilmore Quay, the gateway to the Saltee Islands !

Now, back to the boat to head onwards Southwest towards the mighty County Cork and the village of Kinsale.

089 instead of 080

Just before heading off, we were asked to the pontoon to go through the basics of tying the boat. How should we tie a line to the cleat on the pontoon? Honestly, I thought I knew already. Well I did. But a better way was about to shown to all of us.

Cian lined us up to show us how to:

1 — fasten the line first before tying off

2 — tie off the lines to the cleats for bow and stern

3 — tie off the springs to the cleats for bow and stern

Tying to the cleats

Previously, 080 was my cleat tie off routine but when compared to the 089 configuration it is less secure. On a summer’s day it might matter little but when we might want secure the boat in less favourable conditions, each additional understanding can save us from a potential hazard.

Now armed with more knowledge and skills, we board and set off!
